At Pura Vida Surfing School, one of the most important decisions we make every day is simple but critical: How we choose the best surf spot daily?
We don’t pick a beach at random, and we don’t stay in one place just because it’s familiar. We choose the best surf spot daily based on real conditions, your level and our experience of the coast.
What We Check Before Choosing a Beach

Before any lesson or surf trip, we analyse several key factors:
- Swell size, direction and Period – which beaches will actually be working today.
- Wind strength and direction – whether it’s offshore, sideshore or onshore, and how that affects the waves.
- Tide – some beaches work better on high tide, others on low tide.
- Crowd level – we check busy spots and quieter alternatives.
- Your level and goals – what kind of waves you need for learning or progression.
- Webcams – To have an actual panorama of what to expect.
By combining these variables, we can decide if the best choice is Matosinhos, Canide Sul, Espinho, Silvalde, Paramos or another beach near Porto.
How We Use Local Knowledge

We also rely on local knowledge to refine our choice:
- Experience with the sandbanks and how they shift at different beaches.
- Understanding of which spots are safer and more beginner‑friendly on certain days.
- Knowledge of which beaches suit intermediates and advanced surfers when the swell is bigger.
- Understanding the geography of the spot in order to know on which condition it works better.
This is one of the main advantages of learning with a local surf school: you’re not just going to the closest beach – you’re going to the best beach for your level and the day.
How This Choice Benefits You

When we choose the best surf spot daily, you get:
- More chances to ride real waves, instead of spending the session in tiny or flat water.
- A safer environment, with breaks that match your skill and comfort in the water.
- Better progression, because you practice in waves that challenge you without being overwhelming.
This is why we’re always ready to drive to Espinho, Silvalde, Paramos or another beach instead of forcing everyone into Matosinhos on a bad day.
Bringing It All Together
Our process is simple but effective:
- Check the surf forecast and local cameras.
- Cross‑check with tide and wind.
- Add your level and learning goals.
- Decide on the best beach between Porto, Gaia and Espinho (and sometimes beyond).
- Give you a clear meeting point and time so you know where we’ll surf that day.

FAQs – How We Choose the Best Surf Spot Daily
How do you choose which beach to surf each day?
We check the swell, wind, tide, crowd level and the geography of the beach, then match that information to your level and goals to pick the best beach for the day.
Do you always stay in Matosinhos?
No. When Matosinhos is flat or weak, we move to other beaches like Espinho, Silvalde or Paramos to find better waves and better conditions.
What if the weather looks bad?
We prioritise safety. Although the weather looking bad doesn’t mean theres no good waves out there, we always can find a spot with good conditions for your level. If it’s really impossible we will reschedule or refund.
Will I know where we’re going before the lesson?
Yes. We always communicate the chosen beach, meeting point and time in advance, so you can plan your day and transportation accordingly. We also provide transportation to the surf spots directly from Porto.
