Porto surfing is one of those topics where the gap between what you find online and what locals actually know is enormous. Most articles say the same things: go to Matosinhos, it’s close to the city, there are surf schools there. All technically true. However, that is roughly 20% of the picture. This guide covers the other 80%.
We are Pura Vida Surfing School. We surf this coast every day. Consequently, this is what porto surfing actually looks like from the inside.

The honest truth about surfing in porto
Porto surfing works brilliantly — but not always at Matosinhos, and not always in the afternoon. The two most important things to understand about surfing in Porto are, firstly, that the beach matters enormously and changes daily, and secondly, that the Nortada afternoon wind makes morning sessions non-negotiable in summer.
Furthermore, the beaches south of Porto — Espinho, Silvalde, Paramos — are consistently better for actual surfing than Matosinhos on most days. They pick up more swell, have better sandbank formation, and are significantly less crowded. However, they require transport, which is why going with a school that moves daily is such an advantage.

Real-time porto surfing conditions: Windguru Porto.
Surf by season: what to actually expect
- Summer (June–August): Waves 0.3–0.8m, mostly clean and consistent in the morning. The Nortada wind arrives around midday and ruins afternoon conditions most of the times. Water temperature 17–20°C. Excellent for beginners and families.
- Spring (April–May): Our favourite season. More swell (0.5–1.5m), lighter wind, fewer tourists. Furthermore, the Portuguese spring light is extraordinary. Best overall conditions for all levels.
- Autumn (September–October): Normally great conditions during this time and the swell starts picking up. Atlantic swells build to 0.5–1.5/2m with long period. Water still warm (17–19°C), beaches empty. Consequently, this is when porto surfing is at its absolute best.
- Winter (November–March): Powerful and consistent and a lot of storms on the way. 1.5–4m on bigger days. Cold (13–15°C) but manageable in a 4/3mm wetsuit. Still possible for beginner as Matosinhos is a sheltered beach on bigger days.

Porto surfing beaches: the real breakdown
Here is what each beach is actually like for surfing in Porto — the honest version:
- Matosinhos: Easy access, good on the right day. However, often flat in summer, crowded when it has waves, and water quality is not great. Part of our rotation but not the default.
- Espinho: Our most reliable summer spot. Consistent peaks, good for all levels, significantly less crowded. Accessible by train. Furthermore, Espinho has excellent fish restaurants for post-surf lunch.
- Silvalde: Right next to Espinho, slightly more exposed. Often our first choice when swell is small. Quieter than Espinho.
- Paramos: The best wave in our rotation on good days — but requires a car and is not suitable for beginners on larger days. Additionally, there is no infrastructure (no café, no rentals) — bring your own food.
- Canidelo and cabedelo do Douro: Easy access from porto, canidelo can be a long point break on the good days and cabedelo do douro is a powerful beach break with rights and lefts for all tastes, way less crowd than most of the places in porto area.

FAQ — Porto Surfing

It depends on the day — genuinely. The swell direction, wind, and tide all determine which beach performs best on any given morning. That is why we choose fresh every day.
❓ Can I surf in Porto year round?
Yes — porto surfing is a year-round activity. Summer is best for beginners; autumn through spring is best for intermediates and above. However, all seasons have surfable conditions.
❓ Do I need a car to surf in porto?
Not if you surf with us — we provide transport to all beaches. Matosinhos is accessible by metro. For Espinho, the train works. For other beaches, transport with a school is the most practical option.
