Surfing in Porto can be very safe when you choose the right school, the right beach and the right conditions – and this is exactly how we work at Pura Vida Surfing School.
Is Surfing in Porto Safe? How Pura Vida Surfing School Takes Care of You
Surfing in Porto becomes a safe and fun experience when you are guided by experienced local instructors who know the ocean well. At Pura Vida Surfing School, our main goal is to combine safety, progression and good vibes in every single lesson.
How we choose the best beach every day

We do not surf at the same beach every day, because safety and fun depend a lot on the conditions.
Before each lesson, we carefully check:
- Swell size and direction
- Wind strength and direction
- Tides and sandbanks
- The level of the group (complete beginners, families, intermediates, etc.)
We normally check this with the help of surf forecast and beachcam websites.
Based on this, we choose the beach that is safest and most suitable for your level.
On bigger days, we prefer more sheltered spots and white‑water zones close to the shore, perfect for learning in comfort. On smaller days, we can use open waves to help you progress faster in a controlled way.
Experienced instructors always by your side

At Pura Vida Surfing School, you are never left alone in the ocean.
Your instructors:
- Have many years of experience in the water and in teaching surf to all levels
- Know the local beaches, currents and sandbanks in detail
- Always start with a safety briefing on the beach before going into the water
- Show you the safe areas, where to paddle out and how to come back to the sand
- Stay close to the group, constantly watching and giving feedback
- Adapt the lesson if the conditions change during the session
You are also equipped with soft‑top boards and full wetsuits chosen for your size, level and the season, which adds another layer of safety and comfort.
Simple safety rules we ask you to follow

Even with experienced instructors and a carefully chosen beach, your attitude is part of your safety. During your surf lesson with Pura Vida, we ask you to:
- Listen carefully to the instructions on the sand
- Don’t grab the leash so it doesn’t go strangle your finger when the board flies with the foam of the wave
- Enter the water only with your instructor and stay inside the defined area
- Keep enough distance from other surfers and boards, don’t be behind them
- Fall flat like a starfish, never head‑first or feet first
- Hold your board on the side when a wave comes towards you
- Tell us immediately if you feel cold, tired or anxious
When you follow these rules, the risk of injuries or bad experiences becomes very low, and you can relax and enjoy your first waves.

FAQs – Surfing Safely with Pura Vida Surfing School
1. I am a complete beginner. Is it safe for me to surf with Pura Vida?
Yes. Most of our students are complete beginners, and we design the first lesson exactly for that level. We choose gentle waves, stay in shallow water and guide you step by step, from lying on the board to your first take‑off.
2. I am not a strong swimmer. Can I still join a lesson?
You should always tell us honestly about your swimming level. If you are not very confident, we keep you in water where you can stand, stay very close to you and may recommend a smaller group or even a private lesson so you feel 100% supported.
3. What if the waves are too big on the day of my lesson?
If the ocean is too strong at one beach, we look for a more sheltered spot or adjust the time of the lesson. If conditions are really not safe for your level, we will reschedule instead of forcing a session in dangerous waves.
4. Is the water temperature a problem in Porto?
The water in northern Portugal can be fresh, especially outside summer, but we provide full wetsuits adapted to the season. They keep you warm and comfortable so you can focus on learning, not on the cold.
5. Is surfing with kids safe at Pura Vida?
Yes, as long as we follow some rules. Kids use soft‑top boards, warm wetsuits and stay very close to the instructor in shallow water. We adapt the group size and the exercises to their age, energy and confidence, and we always keep safety as the top priority.
6. Can I surf alone after one lesson?
We don’t recommend surfing alone right after your very first lesson, especially in an unknown spot. The best option is to do a few lessons to understand currents, rules and basic technique, and then ask your instructor when and where it is safe for you to start surfing more independently.
7. What makes Pura Vida different from just renting a board?
When you only rent a board, you are on your own with the conditions, currents and crowds. With Pura Vida, you get experienced local instructors, the right beach for that day, constant supervision and feedback, and a safe structure that turns your first surf in Porto into a positive memory instead of a scary experience.
